Three Officers Injured After Breaking Up School Fight

Posted: Updated:
Northeast Philadelphia -

Chaos was caught on camera in the Lawncrest section of the city where several teenagers were arrested and officers were injured.

Witnesses say it was the result of an after school fight that got out of control.

We're told one Philadelphia police officer and two school resource officers were hurt.

Those officers were treated for minor injuries like cuts and bruises and are out of the hospital.

"I saw a whole group of people, they were just fighting. I saw cops beating on kids with a stick," witness Sadia Giles said.

Surveillance footage from a nearby business showed many of those people scattering away from the brawl along Summerdale Avenue around three in the afternoon Thursday.

"It wasn't exactly a mob, somebody grabbed a couple of their people and somebody else got a couple of they people and they just started duking it out, out here," witness Kydaire Bennett said.

Bennett shot video of police rushing to the scene on his cell phone.

Giles said things got violent quickly.

"I saw them hitting the cops, and that's when they ran escaped, they got away, and that's when I got to Brill and saw some cops slam a little boy on his head, and then they started punching him, just punching him," she said.

Several witnesses said the initial fight stems from a previous incident between two girls at nearby Samuel Fels High School.

"It's about girls arguing. You know boyfriend, all that stuff." witness Emmanuel Harris said.

"That's when the boys got into it, and when the boys got into it, it started getting deeper," Giles said.

Bennett said one his friends got arrested after mouthing off to an officer.

That's why Giles said she kept her distance.

"I had to watch out the way. I didn't want no random cop coming and getting me and hit me for no reason, I'm just walking. They were just locking random people up for no reason," she said.

A spokesperson for the Philadelphia School District said two students from Dobbins High School and two students from Fels High School were among the arrested.

The mother of one of those students said her son was released later that evening without any charges.
