Flight attendants injured on flight from Newark

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) - Several flight attendants were hurt when a plane that had taken off from Newark Liberty International Airport experienced severe turbulence about 45 minutes into the flight.

The United Airlines Flight 89 returned to the airport on Thursday afternoon.

five flight attendants complained of injuries but most appeared to be bumps and bruises.  Three of them were taken to University Hospital and the other two were taken to Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth.

United issued a statement saying that there were 189 passengers and 16 crew members on the plane.

United Flight 89 was headed to Beijing, China.  The Port Authority says there was no interruption to airport operations due to the emergency return by the plane.

United Airlines says it has a team in Newark to review the event.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.

    Authorities say a man fatally shot his wife and wounded himself at a hospital in southern New Jersey. Camden County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Jason Laughlin says the shooting happened Wednesday at Kennedy University Hospital in Stratford. The man was being treated for his injuries.
