Bristol Mom Fights To Keep Autism Foundation Running

Posted: Updated:

The Monroe Foundation For Autism housed in the Bucks County Center on Veterans Highway helps more than a dozen kids with autism. This summer those kids might not get the help they need because of funding cuts.

11-year old Christine is one of those children. She's thriving, but she has autism.

"She'll stay in the house for a couple of months," said her mother Jennifer Smeltzer. Her daughter has been involved with the Monroe Foundation for Autism for more than a year to get help with her social skills.

"It's just nice to see her open up with other kids," said Jennifer. Jennifer says the free therapy for her daughter comes without the hefty price of other autism related care.

"Art therapy is $80 a half hour so the social skills group is very important because it gives the kids an outlet and it's not so costly on the parents."

The program may have to close because grant money received from Bristol Township through federal funds is in jeopardy.

"I just saw for 2014 we had no money and we weren't being funded," said Tamara Monroe. She started the foundation after her son Matthew was diagnosed.

"My heart sank because you put your heart and soul into something then to have the feeling you're going to lose it that quickly. I also thought about the families because I see how much the children enjoy it," said Tamara. She went to Thursday night's township meeting to make a plea to council to help restore funding. Councilman Craig Bowen says the cuts are coming from the federal government.

"This year the funding was very low so we dispersed what we could and we're hoping to receive more money," said Bowen.

In the meantime, Tamara worries kids that like Christine won't have anywhere to go.

"We're one of a kind. There's not many organizations like us around this area," she said.

On January 25, the organization will have a Zumbathon Fundraiser:
