Victim's Mother Speaks Out After Daughter Is Murdered Over Her Purse

Northern Liberties -

Was a young woman gunned down right in front of her mother all over a $14 purse?

"It was senseless, it was absolutely pointless."

Stephanie Long was standing right next to her daughter Amber, seen in Facebook photos, when an armed robber shot the 26-year-old architect in the chest one time, ending a promising life way too soon.

"Amber was an absolutely beautiful, happy young woman," Long told Fox 29 about her only child.

Stephanie and her daughter were walking on the 900 block of Front Street in Northern Liberties around 10:30 Sunday night when she says three men in a car pulled up, two got out and announced a robbery. They stole her purse and then tried to take Amber's

"She paid $14 for that purse earlier in the day," Long said. "They tried to grab it, she wouldn't let go of it and they shot her. They shot to kill. It was point blank."

"It was very random," said Homicide Captain James Clark. "The mother and daughter, I don't know where they were coming from, they just got off a train, walking towards their car. I believe these males saw them thought they were easy targets."

Police say the two robbers jumped back into the car and made their getaway with Stephanie's stolen purse. Monday morning police surrounded a home on Camac Street. Two men there were taken in for questioning.

"They do fit the description of the murderers, we have them in homicide now and we're speaking to them," Clark added. "We do have two persons of interest in this murder upstairs in homicide now. We're speaking with. We do not have enough to call them suspects or charge them."

"They shot her in the chest. In the heart and they shot to kill. There's no two ways about it. Over a freaking purse," Long said.

Stephanie Long says Amber graduated from Philadelphia University. She loved to travel and was working as an architect' at a local company when her life was cut short.

"She never had any problems. She was a straight a student, she loved the city she loved life. She loved her job."

Police were waiting for a search warrant to search that home on Camac Street, looking for the murder weapon. They have not recovered the getaway car, which they believe could be a dark colored Dodge Stratus.

Homicide detectives were also reviewing surveillance video from the surrounding area. The suspects did not get away with Amber's purse.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
