PHILADELPHIA -

Heavy snow and frigid temperatures are pounding the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says that the storm could bring up to a foot of snow Tuesday into Wednesday to Philadelphia and New York. Also, expect bitterly cold air with wind chills as low as 10 degrees below zero. The NWS warned of heavy winds and hazardous driving conditions throughout the day as the storm moves up the East Coast.

Philadelphia schools and the Archdiocese schools will be closed on Wednesday. Schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut and West Virginia had already sent students home early on Tuesday or stayed closed after the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

In the Philadelphia area, the snow has been falling heavily since about noon. Local crews have prepared for the storm, but no preparation can prepare for the brunt of the storm. Traffic on the roads are at a crawl as ice, snow and hazardous conditions make it difficult to drive.

PennDOT's Charles Metzger said early Tuesday morning that they have 415 plow trucks plowing the snow.

Despite all these preparations, the afternoon commute will be very bad. If you do drive, make sure to drive carefully.

Nearly 2,200 flights are canceled and thousands more have been delayed as a winter storm bears down on the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Flight-tracking site Flightaware.com reports that airports from Washington to Boston have been impacted Tuesday. An additional 450 flights for Wednesday are already canceled.
