NY Officials Verify East River Remains Belong To Avonte Oquendo

Posted: Updated:

Avonte Oquendo, a non-communicative autistic child, has been found in the worst way possible: NY officials have confirmed that the remains that recently washed up belonged to Oquendo.

Oquendo went missing Oct. 4, 2013. Surveillance caught him exiting the school, which then prompted a search for the boy. Various remains that fit the description of Oquendo washed up on Thursday 1/15, but DNA tests confirmed Tuesday 1/21 that the remains were Oquendo's.

According to Fox News Latino, Oquendo's family has filed a notice of claim threatening to sue the city for allowing Oquendo to escape the school and delaying a police report of his disappearance.

According to the family's lawyer, David Percemen, Oquendo's mother, Vanessa Fontaine, is determined to not lose hope for her son.

"Her initial reaction was, 'until I hear more or see more'... She's not going to be convinced it's her son unless there's enough to convince her," said Percemen.
