MLK Store Sign Generates Controversy

Posted: Updated:

Who doesn't love a great deal? Well, it turns out, there's a sale at one Minnesota store that people aren't too thrilled about.

The owner of "Global Village" posted a sign in the store window, advertising a special Martin Luther King Junior day sale. The store offers 25% off everything black!

Furthermore, a photo of the sign has now gone viral on the Internet.

This isn't the first time "Global Village" has done this type of sale. It's actually the fourth time. The owner says they've never had a reaction like this. Past MLK sales have been without complaint.

"We did this out of admiration and celebration for somebody who did so much for the world, for black culture. Somebody we admire greatly. It was done out of honor and we're very sorry that we hurt anybody's feelings," said Rachel Mock of Global Village.

But George Ellsworth, who took the picture, has a different view.

"It's the connotation of the color black in association with this particular observance is just not thoughtful and frankly, possibly in poor taste," said Ellsworth, an African American.

The store says it will not be having the MLK sale next year.
