30-Year Hospital Volunteer Celebrates 100th Birthday

GLENDALE, AZ -

It's a day at a place that Peggy Hodgson loves to be, but today is special because she will be celebrating her 100th birthday.

"I was amazed I was flabbergasted. It was fantastic, fantastic! A lot of these people I've known a long, long time, many, many years, Hodgson said.

These are the people whom she says are the reason she returns week after week at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, where she's volunteered the last 30 years.

She's helped out in many ways.

"I love to pray with the patients. I used to pray with them all the time. Sometimes if they were jittery and crying and everything, they'd say, ‘go get Peggy.'"

If you ask her, her blue volunteer uniform from years ago was her favorite and the pink roses make her smile. She loves the color pink. If you ask those around her, it's her devotion to service that makes her unique.

"I knew she was from New York and I used to describe her as Edith Bunker because that's just the personality she has: she loves people, she loves to help people," said Teresa Sawyer, Peggy's friend.

"I hope and trust in God that if anything ever happens to me, it happens right here because I know I'll get the attention, and if my time is up, it's up," said Hodgson.

Full of life, and tough as a tack, Peggy Hodgson, happy birthday!
