Woman Delivers Baby In Home Driveway

Posted: Updated:

Shocking and unexpected, a woman on her way to the hospital delivers her daughter standing in the driveway...in the freezing cold.

FOX's Lexie O'Connor sat down with mom, dad and the newborn and re-lives a story this family will never forget.

"I was thinking to myself why do people want to do this natural? I need an epidural right now, this is awful," Abigail Cain said.

There was no time for an epidural.

"I was just waiting for him, I was walking around while he was getting out last bag," Cain said.

No time to even get to the hospital.

"I put the phone down and felt the need to push, so I said I have to push," Cain said.

Abby Cain was giving birth then.

"So I honked on horn, was just laying on horn, and I pushed and her head came, and I was like oh my gosh, okay," Cain said.

With dad in the house...Abby pushed, and pushed again. The baby was born, just as dad Joseph Cain came out.

"I heard a baby crying and I thought, no, no, that's not a baby crying," Joseph said.

Seven lbs., five ounces, Danica Annmarie was born right in her driveway.

"And then I saw her and she was holding the baby, and she said, 'Joe, I just had her and I was like what," Joe said.

It was all at five in the morning Friday when temperatures were below zero. The parents quickly brought Danica inside and keep her warm. Dad talked to dispatch the whole time.

"I kept looking out window, saying where the ambulance, is where's the ambulance, it felt like it was forever," Joseph said.

"The ambulance arrived just 15 minutes later, EMT's finding inside a healthy mom and baby girl," Cain said.

"One guy on squad said first time ever done something like this, I think he was more in shock" Joseph said.

Mom and baby Danica were transported to mercy birth center with no problems.

After just one night, they were able to return home.
