Costs Add Up From Frigid Temperatures

Posted: Updated:

In our area we've had our fair share of winter weather, snow, ice, frigid temperatures but it's more than just an annoyance this winter is getting downright expensive.

"I've been working 16 hours a day. six days a week to fix home heating systems that have gone kaput in this cold," Ramon Hernandez of R&R Medical said. "We get a cold day there's not enough heat and insulated pipes behind the walls. They freeze and expand crack the pipe...

Pipes bursting, systems breaking. Ramo explains as people dig out from this snowy winter they may be forced to dig deeper into their wallets.

"There's a cost of 10 thousand or greater some homeowners are seeing," Ramon said..

$10,000? That's just our homes...what about our cars??

New tires could run about $200 a pop, according to Thomas Flora of Evan's Gulf on Spring Garden Street.

"Potholes are tearing up our tires," Flora said. "We're having a lot of battery failures, tires going flat, coolant leaks and wiper blades broken."

Even grabbing a jug of washer fluid is an expense that adds up.

"You gotta get the salt if the car or it's gonna screw up your paint," George Dilworth of Roxborough said,

"I just do a basic wash I think its $12-$15 maybe."

One new car tire, a new battery, washer fluid and an occasional wash is a whopping $350 on average.

"We haven't seen a winter like this in a while ," Ramon said.
