Alderman Burke proposes ordinance to ban horse-drawn carriages

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A powerful alderman dropped a bomb Wednesday on a small but nostalgic Chicago industry.

Alderman Ed Burke proposed an ordinance that would effectively ban horse-drawn carriages from the city.

The ordinance would end the renewal of licenses for the carriages.

Three companies currently operate horse drawn carriages.

They have about 25 horses.

One company with ten horses said the work provides full-time hours to eight of its workers at the height of the season, when the weather is good.

The work is much spottier in winter.

The ordinance has not passed yet.
