Russia Aims To Reinforce Squirrel Poaching Ban

Posted: Updated:

You'd think the Russians would have enough to worry about with the Olympics getting underway.

However, in Moscow, the authorities are now looking for squirrel poachers in the parks. In the Russian capital, it's a crime to capture squirrels. Because of that, it's also become a black-market business.

Online, the animals sell for $140. However, the online ads also warn people: squirrels aren't great pets...they need to be kept outdoors...and, in close quarters, they can make people sick.

With all that, there's still a demand for these creatures. The fine for squirrel poaching is about $570.

Squirrel lovers at this Moscow park say the poachers are getting off easy. One woman says the fine should be in the thousands.
