Delaware County's Senior Center Residents Learn To Cope Without Power

Posted: Updated:
NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. -

PECO reports more than 244,000 customers are still without power.

Most are in the four Philadelphia suburban counties. Bucks County has 51,389 customers without power. 75,093 are without power in Montgomery County and Chester County tops the list at 90,059 customers without electricity.

Fox 29's Thalia Perez went to Newtown Square, Delaware County where 20,000 people are still in the dark.

"The toughest thing is during the night when you can't see anything.  During the day it's ok.  At night it's difficult because I have no light in my apartment," resident Ruth Hass says.

Ruth Haas is one of 160 people living without power and heat at the Sprawling Martins Run Senior Living Center.  Today her thermostat reads 60 degrees but last night it was dangerously cold.

Linda Sterhous, the property's CEO, says it was as low as 40 degrees in some apartments.

"When it gets cold, It's hypothermia we worry about. That's a body temperature dropping well below normal and can put them in danger of illness even death," says Linda Sterhous.

Generators are being supplied in the assisted living and critical care wings of the property thanks to a generous donation from Jim Perkins from Acme supermarkets.  Other areas are getting limited power but still not enough to turn on the heat or warm up the water.

"Folks are bundling up each night.  Wearing their clothes to bed.  Lots of blankets.  But they're getting cold and weary," Sterhouse continues.

Residents are able to take part in exercise classes and warm meals in the bistro to take people's minds off the cold.

"I'm glad residents are trying to enjoy the situation.  But I'm upset PECO is not stepping up to do what it should do," says Rob Nathans.
