Hollywood's Stars Pay Their Respects At Seymour's Funeral

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds came to say good bye to Philip Seymour Hoffman. The private funeral at 'St. Ignatius of Loyola' church on 'Park Avenue' was filled with actors, writers and directors who had worked with the academy award-winning actor.

Actress Cate Blanchett spoke at the service. Also paying their respects were Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Marrisa Tomei, Michelle Williams, Brian Dennehy, Spike Lee, Joaquin Phoenix and Ethan Hawke.

The film and theater community is mourning the loss of Hoffman, who is widely considered to be among the best of his generation.

Playwright Jose Rivera says it was a beautiful tribute.

"It was respectful, loving, and simple," Rivera says.

Hoffman leaves behind his partner of 15 years, Mimi O'Donnell, and their three children.

Hoffman, 46, was found in his 'West Village' apartment Sunday dead of an apparent heroin overdose.

The actor had spoken candidly about his struggle with drugs. He had been clean for more than 20 years before suffering a relapse about 2 years ago.

Those remembering Hoffman today say the service celebrated his life. Friends talked about funny memories with the actor.

"He made us all laugh. You could always hear his voice in the room," Rivera remembers

"I think he connected universally through reaching down in a deep part of himself. I don't know there is something spiritual about the whole thing. The way people who didn't even know him were so affected. It is just so unexpected." actress Amy Stiller says.
