Fire Displaces Close To 30 People In NE Philly

Northeast Philadelphia -

Firefighters were called to the 2100 block of Michener Street just after 5.a.m. Sunday morning.

The early morning fire forces dozens of people to evacuate into the cold. While the fire department investigates the cause, many of the residents spent the day going through what's left of their belongings.

"It's crazy in here, there's a lot of glass everywhere," Michael Rios said.

Michael Rios described the horror as he walked back into his charred apartment building in Northeast Philadelphia for the first time after the fire. "The apartments got destroyed," he said.

Inside their unit, Rios and his family did their best to salvage what they could.

"We just got to work it out, and pray to God that things will get better," they said.

They lost invaluable family photos in the fire.

"Stuff that you'd like to keep for memory, it just got destroyed, but there is nothing you can do about it," Rios said.

It appears the fire broke out on the bottom floor around 5 a.m. on the 2100 block of Michener Street.

Rios tried to grab his three year old son's coat amid the chaos.

"A whole bunch of black smoke just hit, hit me hard and I started coughing and turned right back around," he said.

26 adults and 3 children spent the morning on a SEPTA bus to stay warm.

They were joined by Beggar, Bolt and Sock, one family's pets.

The American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania was there to lend a hand.

"We're providing food, clothing, and financial assistance to make sure families have what they need. Some families have come running out in their pajamas and have nothing," Southeast Pennsylvania American Red Cross CEO Renee Cardwell Hughes said.

"Everything is messed up," Patience Robertson said.

Robertson waded through her damaged apartment for the essentials.

"Just grabbing some clothes, toothbrush, something just to hold onto right now," she said

She was one of many who carried out their lives in a single suitcase.

"It could have been worse, people could have lost their lives, but nobody lost their life, thank God," Rios said.

We're told the landlord of the building is putting up the displaced residents in other units in this complex.

Others will be living in another apartment complex a few minutes away.
