Touching Photos Gives Animal Shelter Social Media Viral Support

BERKS COUNTY, Pa. -

The program lets little kids read to sheltered cats to sooth both the kids and the cats. After photos have gone viral on social media, the Berks Animal Rescue League is getting some love all over the Internet.

The program is called "Book Buddies" and it allows kids from grades 1-8 to read to cats in the adoption room.

"The program will help children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals. Cats find the rhythmic sound of a voice very comforting and soothing," the Animal Rescue League said on their website.

The program has been around since August of 2013, according to the site, but social media jumped the program into the national consciousness when a local resident uploaded a photo of a kid reading to a cat to reddit.

The photo was so cute and got more than 53,672 upvotes and 1038 comments in the AWW subreddit.

Some users on reddit are applauding how great this program is.

User twizling writes:

this is so clever in many ways

1. The boy gets a friend and free company with a cat

2. the cat gets love from the boy

3. the boy improves his reading skills

4. SO …CUTE

And then user initialsam adds, "1. The kid falls in love with the cat and convinces his parents to adopt him/her. It's foolproof."

Berks County ARL has seen an increase in traffic, and they've thanked Reddit in a post on Facebook.

"We are THRILLED[.] We know lots of people are trying to access our website and the high traffic is slowing things down, but we hope you'll be patient.

Maybe that's the secret to life: cute animals, cute kids, a good cause and social media to spread your message.
