Scientists Forecast El Niño For Summer

Posted: Updated:

It's been a record-breaking winter with sub-zero temperatures and all of this snow.

Now a group of German scientists are saying that there's a 75% chance that this could be the hottest summer on record.

That's because of El Niño. An El Niño occurs when Pacific waters along the equator are unusually warm. It has the potential to change ocean currents and wind currents across the globe, pushing extremely warm temperatures into the atmosphere.

Early indications suggest that the weather pattern could arrive by June. These researchers that claim their model has successfully predicted El Niño events over the past two years. However, other scientists call the model outdated and say that because water temperatures are influenced very much by whether trade winds change direction by springtime, so forecasting El Niño this early will not yield accurate results. Also, this model is a statistical model and does not look at the physics of the sea or atmosphere. Therefore, pure statistical analysis will be able to find a pattern in anything if not modulated with scientific backing.

Who should we believe? For most people in New England and the Mid-Atlantic, it's best just to worry about digging out of the snow for now.
