Mayor Nutter: City Still Under Snow Emergency

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA, P.A. -

Mayor Nutter delivered a press conference today telling Philadelphians what they should expect in the next 24 hours.

Philadelphia remains under a snow emergency, according to Nutter, which means the Parking Authority (PPA) is still towing vehicles off of emergency roads if you park them there. If your vehicle is towed, call 215-686-SNOW, but do not call 911. Mayor Nutter insisted that 911 be called only in the case of life threatening emergencies.

Property owners must clear a three foot wide path on their sidewalks within six hours after the storm, but cannot throw the snow back into the street, Nutter explained.

"It is disrespectful to the workers, the Streets Department, the Parks and Recreation folks, and the Parking Authority – it is disrespectful to the work they are doing," said Nutter. "It is against the law, the Streets Department is monitoring and you can be fined for doing that,."

Trash collection has been suspended for today and tomorrow because of expected continuation of the snowy weather.

"We will have about 24 straight hours of some kind of precipitation," said Nutter.

Trash that is normally collected on Thursday or Friday will be collected next week, on its normal collection day.

All bus service was suspended at 10 am this morning, but the Streets Department has 427 vehicles and over 700 personnel working to improve the conditions of the roads. Read the latest bus/rail updates here.

PennDOT has reduced speeds to 45 mph on all interstates, says Nutter.

PECO only reports 87 power outages, which is significantly lower than the most recent weather event that resulted in thousands of homes without power.

Philadelphia International Airport is open, but only has one runway in use right now. Over 846 flights have been canceled, and anyone with a canceled flight is urged to contact their carrier.
