Pizza Shop Owner Opens His Restaurant To The Homeless

Posted: Updated:

Serving meals means more than one thing to Derrick Walton.  He's also serves members of his community.  Every Monday he closes his pizzeria and makes full hot meals free to anyone who needs it.

"I want to keep this going every Monday. This is not just once a month," says Walton.

"It's a good feeling to have someone who likes to volunteer do something like this for people that you don't even know out of your goodness of your heart, I hope people learn from this," volunteer, Toby Sovara, says .

But it wasn't always like this! Walton was once homeless on the streets of Detroit.

"I found myself in a tight situation where it landed me homeless, nowhere to go. And when I looked for help, doors were closed and there were 'NOs," Walton remembers.

He told himself if he ever got the chance, he'd give back

"I made a promise to myself that if I ever get a chance to give back to somebody that'd been in my predicament that I would do it. So I'm keeping this promise to myself," declares Walton.

The problem Walton says they're having is not enough people know about the meals yet!

"I would like to have a line out the door where people are standing, wait to get an amazing meal," Walton wishes.

Chef d says it's not that they don't have enough mouths to feed, but that people don't have transportation to get here, which is why they're doing these to-go boxes, so that way even if people can't get to a hot meal, a hot meal can get to them.

Shelters and churches have been delivering the meals around the city
