Two-Thirds Of Turnpike Crash Vehicles May Be Totaled

BRISTOL, Pa. -

Friday's massive pileup on the Pennsylvania Turnpike has left a local auto body shop slammed.

Rob's Automotive and Collision Center Operations Manager Kevin Wilson has his hands full this weekend logging and processing 70 cars and six tractor trailers involved in the crash.

All of the vehicles from the wreck were spread out at three different lots at Rob's Automotive.

Wilson estimated that two thirds of the cars are totaled.

"In the 30 years Rob Leipziger has been in business this has been by far the worst accident we have seen as far as numbers," he said.

Just before 8 a.m., Pennsylvania State Police said several drivers lost control of their vehicles for unknown reasons near mile marker 350 in Lower Southampton Township.

They said it's possible wind, snow, ice and speed caused the series of wrecks that backed up the interstate for several miles and hours.

The pileup left dozens of vehicles in bad shape.

"A lot of rear-end damage, a lot of front-end damage, a lot of vehicles going under tractor-trailers. Like I said, we had a couple vehicles that rolled over," Wilson said.

Rob's Automotive towed all the vehicles off the turnpike, a service that starts at $125.

Wilson said only around half of the drivers from the crash have full-coverage insurance.

Because of the sheer number of vehicles in their lots, he said the owners won't be able to get them until Monday.

For the ones that aren't totaled, it could take weeks to have them repaired.

"Our manager of our collision shop told me this morning he's got five or six orders for repairs," Wilson said.

Some of the victims of the crash told FOX 29 News by phone they're tired and sore from the accident.

The Turnpike Commission did not lower the speed limits Saturday because of the weather.
