Houston Businesses Discriminate Against Man With Service Dog

Posted: Updated:

After being humiliated by a hotel and a coffee shop, Yancy Baer says he hopes to bring awareness and reduce ignorance towards disabilities in the service industry.

A veteran of war, Baer received a service dog because of his amputated leg. He works with Wounded Warriors at the Center For The Intrepid at Fort Sam Houston.

His faithful service dog, Verbana, serves him daily for various needs that he may struggle with because of his injury. However, two Houston locations refused to accept his need for his dog, he says.

"The hotel chain wanted to me to use six flights of stairs at the end of the hotel so I wasn't seen with the dog," said Baer.

Baer said that another incident happened at a local coffee shop, where he was interrogated about his disability. The clerk allegedly told him that he isn't blind, suggesting that his service dog was unnecessary.

"I've never felt uncomfortable about my prosthetic. I was in pants and a dress shirt. And that day I basically had to announce to a supervisor that I'm an amputee and that this dog is my service dog," said Baer.

While the coffee shop did issue an apology to Baer, the veteran is now on a mission to bring awareness to the service industry regarding different types of disabilities and their appropriate service dogs. The campaign is called "You Don't Know Beanz." They already have 1,000 followers on Facebook.
