New Jersey Tops State List For Outbound Movers

Posted: Updated:

A new study finds many people are saying so long to The Garden State and finding a home somewhere else.

A study by moving company United Van Lines finds more people moved out of New Jersey last year than any other state.

This is the third time in the past four years that Jersey topped the list.

And of the top nine states where more people moved out rather than in, four, including New Jersey, are in the northeast.

Those other northeast states are New York (No. 3), Connecticut (No. 5) and Massachusetts (No. 8).

Here is the top 10 list of states with people moving out:

  1. New Jersey
  2. Illinois
  3. New York
  4. West Virginia
  5. Connecticut
  6. Utah
  7. Kentucky
  8. Massachusetts
  9. New Mexico

Here is the top 10 list of states with people moving in:

  1. Oregon
  2. South Carolina
  3. North Carolina
  4. District of Columbia
  5. South Dakota
  6. Nevada
  7. Texas
  8. Colorado

UVL also noted that this is the first in 16 years that Michigan was not on the list. Michigan had spent 16 years near the top on the outbound list, and was top in moving out from 2006 to 2009.
