2 Million Meals for Children

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of volunteers in Michigan show what the power of good can do as they pack up and send over two million meals to help countries worldwide. The fun didn't stop there. FOX's Robin Murdoch has the story.

"So many people wonder whether people care about others, whether they will do something for others, and the truth is they will when given the opportunity," Brad Powell, Senior Pastor at Northridge Church said.

For some 10,000 people, that opportunity took them to the Suburban Collection Showplace over the weekend. They stood side by side for hours to help the hungry all over the world. The need is numbing.

"We have corporations who invited teams out for team building. [I]t's insiders and outsiders, it's believers and unbelievers, it's people from the community saying, 'they don't have what we have, lets be a part of changing their lives,'" Powell said.

And scoop by scoop they are doing that, volunteers from every walk of life, from adults to those just learning to walk and talk, came together to assemble 2,000,0000,000 meals in just three days.

Northridge Church out of Plymouth, Michigan organized the effort.

"There's nothing better than watching these little ones get fired up and to expose them to kids in other countries who don't get three meals or one meal a day, so for them to get exposed to the reality that not everyone lives like they do is invaluable," Michael Miller, Director of Outreach said.

There are 11 two-hour-shifts out with 900 people packing meals each time. That's a lot of time for some of these people to be on their feet, but they say it's completely worth it and this tally right here is their motivation.

"I think we all tend to get trapped in our own lives and it's so nice and refreshing you feel the energy and love when you give out to other people. It's awesome," Sue Wiard, a volunteer said.

It's an endeavor that's making a difference with each box that's packed, stacked and shipped off.

From here, the food will travel to those who need the nourishment in Haiti, El Salvador and the Philippines. In days, they will be eating and feeling the love from Michigan.

"This is why this event is so cool, it's tangible, it's touching. You are not sending a dollar around the world. You are touching the rice, you are touching the formula, putting them in boxes and then they are being opened by real people whose lives are being transformed," Powell said.
