Port Richmond Recovering From Water Main Break

Posted: Updated:
PORT RICHMOND -

New trouble could be on the way for a neighborhood in Port Richmond still recovering from flood damage after a water main break Wednesday night.

Now residents said they're nervous more flooding could hit their neighborhood because of melting snow and significant rainfall.

"That was their playroom. To me it's nothing, but to them it's their stuff," Sheena Maude said while describing cell phone video of water pouring into her basement.

Her home is one of at least 10 to have major water damage along Livingston Street from the water main burst.

Maude said she feels the worst for her children, who lost their toys from the standing water.

A godmother replaced some of her two year old's destroyed toys, but that may be a temporary relief, as Maude thinks the forecasted thunderstorms could bring rain, wind, and more loss.

"They took everything out of our basements today and they put it in our backyard, so anything that might be salvageable is just going to get wet tomorrow," she said.

George Graf also has his eye on the predicted rainfall.

Coupled with melting snow and ice blocking drains, Graf worried his property could suffer another round of flooding.

"I really don't want my stuff, any more damage to my home. It's just becoming a problem day in and day out now," he said, "Once it starts to melt heavily, I more afraid that the rain is going to have nowhere to go."

Maude has been staying with her aunt for the time being. She was also concerned that potential flooding could wreck her house's foundation for good.

"The water washed all the dirt and stuff from underneath my pavement. I'm thinking it's going to be worse. I'm afraid of structural damage," she said.

Maude says she and several neighbors have had their claims denied by their private insurance companies who said the liability belongs on the city.

She says she has to wait for adjusters and inspections to be done before she can submit a claim to the city.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
