Pig Finds Grenade In Farm

Posted: Updated:
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, NC -

A pig gets his nose into some deep trouble in Spartanburg Count after finding a grenade. The pig's owner was worried, but it's not uncommon for people to find ammunition in the area.

Deputies say finding old military explosives near the camp croft area of Spartanburg County is not all that uncommon, but the way this one was found was certainly a first.

These pigs, like any others, enjoy rooting around in the mud, but, yesterday, their snouts caused quite a stir on Jones Road in the Enoree Community. The pigs' owner, Eugene Hunter Jr., says he was feeding the pigs when one of them turned up something he immediately recognized. "I looked down; I saw what seemed to be a grenade, and I was stunned," Hunter says.

Hunter backed away quickly and called 911.

Lieutenant Ashley Harris, a member of the county's Bomb Squad Unit, says the grenade "is a mark two grenade used in World War II." Harris says that it was hard to tell at first if the grenade was live, since it was buried in the dirt.

Even after it was determined the grenade did not contain explosives, it still posed a danger. "Even it's a training grenade, it can still have a blasting cap inside," Harris says. According to Harris, getting calls for old ordinance is actually common.

Discoveries around camp croft are frequent because it used to be a military training area. "A lot of people used to bring these back from their time in the military as souvenirs. We recover these from attics all across Spartanburg County," Harris says. And each time they do, they have to treat the explosive as if it was live.

Hunter says he will also treat any future discoveries his pigs make as real, and he recommends anyone who finds on of these do the same. "It makes me feel nervous because I don't know if I go down and feed the pigs, maybe I'll step on one."
