NEW YORK (AP) - The deadline for Bernard Madoff's victims to sign up for a relief fund has been extended.

The previous deadline for petitions to the Madoff Victim Fund was Feb. 28. It is now April 30.

The fund will distribute assets forfeited in the Madoff case. It's separate from a bankruptcy court proceeding that has recovered money to redistribute to burned Madoff clients.

So far, the victim fund has received more than 9,000 claims. Special Master Richard C. Breeden says the majority of them come from investors who are ineligible for the money being assembled in the bankruptcy court proceeding.

He also says many people who may be eligible only recently learned that the fund exists.

Bernie Madoff is serving a 150-year prison sentence for bilking thousands of people of nearly $20 billion.

Police are responding to the Brooklyn Bridge where two whitewashed American flags have been raised. It is not clear who raised the flags or why. The American flags that are normally up at the bridge appear to have been removed. Several officers scaled the bridge and lowered one of the flags at about 11 a.m., reported the Associated Press.

Polluted Gowanus Canal doesn't scare away neighborhood development

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
