Study Shows Dogs May Understand Human Emotion

Posted: Updated:

If you ever thought your dog understood what you said…you were probably right.

Hungarian researchers say the canine brain reacts to voices the same way a human brain does.

Scientists trained eleven dogs to lay motionless in an MRI brain scanner to run a neuroimaging experiment on both dog and human participants to understand the similarities

They captured both brain activities as the subjects listened to nearly two hundred sounds.

The scientist found both dog and human brains include voice areas in similar locations and both respond similarly to emotionally-charged sounds, such as, crying or laughter.

The study suggests the voice area of the brain in humans and canines must have evolved at least one hundred million years ago, which is the age of the last known common ancestor between the two species.

Findings appear in the journal "Current Biology."
