100,000 People Gather To Celebrate The "Flight Of The Angel"

Posted: Updated:
VENICE, ITALY -

The Flight of the Angel is one of Venice, Italy's main events in the city's carnival. The tradition dates back to the year 1219.

A visitor chosen at the carnival descended from the Venetian bell tower on a single rope. The angel is chosen by the carnival's beauty contest.

In 1759, a wooden dove replaced a real human being after a human angel fell. In 2001, the "Flight Of The Dove" was reborn as the Flight Of The Angel, featuring a real woman descending on a rope.

The event occurs after the bells ring 12 times, the angel descends and greets spectators

"Oh, she was beautiful. We said she must have had no fear of heights at all to be able to do that, so it was really, really nice. To see her dress in the light and the sun is shining, so it was really lovely, a nice experience," said visitor Justine Howard from Brecon, Wales.

The Venetian carnival will continue through Tuesday, March 4th, 2014.
