Shooting Leaves Temple Students Shaken

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A 21-year old Temple student is out of the hospital after being grazed by a stray bullet fired from outside a birthday party early Sunday morning.

Philadelphia Police tell FOX 29 that one man is in custody and the alleged gunman is still on the loose.

The shooting came after a customer was thrown out of "The Let Out" party venue on 17th  St. and Cecil B. Moore Ave.  Police say minutes after the customer was escorted out of the club he came back with a gun and exchanged gunfire with an armed security guard working the party.

"I shouldn't have to worry about safety but more and more I'm finding I do," said Temple University senior Kelly Klapaltch. Klapaltch lives next door to the fellow student who was shot around 2AM Sunday morning just a block off of Temple's main campus.

"I have never felt safe since the day I moved in here," she said.

Police say at least 29 shots were fired outside the club. One of them traveled more than a block striking the student in the abdomen. The student tells Fox 29 he was walking home with friends when he got shot.  Although he did not want to be identified on camera he did tell FOX 29, "I'm fine. I'd rather not talk about it."

The owner of "The Let Out" says a customer rented the venue for a 33rd birthday party and the customer came with 2 armed private security guards. He credits one of them for taking action. Two security guards were taken in for questioning but released Sunday afternoon.

"For me, he's a hero just for the sake. If he wasn't proactive, only God knows what could have happened," said owner Odi Obilo.

Police say they've arrested Michael Davis Jones in connection with the shooting but they are still searching for the gunman they say pulled the trigger.

In the meantime, Temple students are getting fed up with the recent rash of violence on or near campus.

"People always say Temple is such a dangerous school because stuff like this happens a lot but the fact this happens just off campus is enough to make anyone....I live right up the street. It's worrisome" said Temple junior Haley Parent.

Kelly Klapaltch says she's especially looking forward to graduation so she can move out of North Philadelphia.

"When I am afraid to leave my house at night just to go across the street to get some food, it's pretty scary. I can't wait to leave in three months" said Klapaltch.
