Harold Ramis, famous for writing and directing movies like "Caddyshack" and "Groundhog Day" is dead, according to The Hollywood Reporter. United Talent Agency tells The Hollywood Reporter that Ramis died of auto-immune inflammatory vasculitis, a condition he's battled for the last four years. The rare disease involves swelling of the blood vessels.

Ramis broke through Hollywood in 1978 with his hit "National Lampoon's Animal House." He then went on to co-write and star in "Stripes and two "Ghostbusters" movies. Following "Caddyshack,"  Ramis also did "National Lampoon's Vacation."

His most recent work was in 2009 when we worked with Michael Cera and Jack Black in the movie "Year One." He co-wrote, produced and directed other comedy classics like "Multiplicity" and the Billy Crystal-Robert DeNiro films "Analyze This" and "Analyze That." Ramis also directed 2005's "The Ice Harvest," starring John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton.

Ramis is survived by his sons Julian and Daniel, daughter Violet and two grandchildren.

Ramis went to Washington University in St. Louis. He was born and raised in Chicago. Many older fans will remember him from his days with Chicago's Second City theater troupe and his role on the TV Comedy SCTV, where he starred alongside John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Catherine O'Hara.

Ramis has won many awards for his work, including a BAFTA for "Groundhog Day." He was inducted into the American Screenwriters Association Screenwriting Hall of Fame in 2001.

Harold Ramis was 69 years old.
