National Constitution Center Previews New Exhibit For Spring

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The National Constitution Center announced its next big exhibit coming this spring.

Visiting students got a glimpse of a few of the 280 plus historical artifacts that will be on display during the "Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello" exhibit opening in April.

The items belonged to our nation's third president, Thomas Jefferson, and his slaves.

Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence declaring freedom from the British, but he owned slaves all his life.

"It puts a human face on slavery and helps each of us understand early America," said Monticello Senior Curator Susan Stein. "This was a story that is essential to understanding American history."

The show will run from April 9 to Oct. 19. A rare printing of the Declaration of independence will also be on display during the exhibit.
