Burglars Take Ashes Of Victim's Late Wife

Posted: Updated:
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -

It's a crime so brazen even the most senior officers at the West Windsor Township Police Department are troubled. Heartless thieves stole a woman's ashes in a burglary.

Now, her husband is speaking out, FOX 29's Dave Kinchen reported Monday night.

"As I walk by, you don't tap it anymore, yeah," said Arthur Robinson, explaining how he always used to pass by a dresser in his bedroom where his wife Nancy's remains sat in an urn.

But cold crooks swiped it in one of two burglaries last Thursday, ripping his heart out at the same time.

"Whatever bottom I had just went out, and I just stood there and looked at it," he said.

They took jewelry, too, but the urn is priceless.

Arthur and Nancy were married for more than 50 years, lovebirds who met in college.

"She is a beautiful lady, and she's feistier – she'd be all over this," Arthur said.

The retired high schoolteacher was always by his side even through a lengthy battle with ovarian cancer. It claimed her life a few years ago.

"The comeback from that is day to day stuff is where I am. And so it's still day to day," he said.

And now this.

He says he learned of the break-in when returning from a trip. He found a back screen cut through but says they ultimately got in through a window after busting the latch. The damage was all done upstairs.

"It was one small box there, two drawers, and then two small boxes here," he said. "The big box stood right here on the corner."

Police believe the suspects thought the box contained jewelry, not ashes.

Regardless, Arthur is hoping they do the right thing, no questions asked.

He asked the robbers to "two neighbors removed put it on a shelf somewhere, and write a note where it is or give a call, because it's of absolutely no value to anyone else, and it's priceless to us."

West Windsor investigators say they do have evidence that they are looking at but they need help from the public in getting the urn returned.

In the meantime, Crimestoppers of Greater Trenton is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest, Kinchen reported.
