New Study: Tylenol And ADHD Risk In Children

Posted: Updated:

A new study potentially links taking Tylenol during pregnancy to ADHD in kids.

Researchers looked at data collected from over 60,000 mothers from 1996 to 2002.

They later analyzed the same group when their children were seven years old.

Overall, the use of Tylenol or generic acetaminophen was associated with a 20% increased risk of behavioral problems.

The strongest effects were seen in women who took Tylenol all three trimesters. Researchers say moms need to be more judicious about how frequently they take Tylenol. They also stress that further investigations will be needed.

Doctors stress that an association between two things does not mean one causes the other. For example, maybe some third factor is leading to mothers taking acetaminophen and having higher risk of childhood ADHD (called a moderator in statistics).
