Main Line Health Changing Policy On Smokers

Posted: Updated:
BRYN MAWR, Pa. -

A new policy will impact workers and future employees at Main Line Health who smoke.

The company said on Monday that they will no longer hire tobacco and nicotine users after May 1 of this year.

Current employees who do smoke will pay a $20 surcharge for health benefits starting in 2015.

They'll also be offered smoking cessation classes. In fact, employees who complete the class will receive $100. Those in violation of the policy will be subject to disciplinary action. To test for violations, random nicotine lab screenings will be performed for two years.

Main Line Health says it's their responsibility to set an example of wellness.

Main Line Health consists of Bryn Mawr Hospital, Lankenau Medical Center, Paoli Hospital and Riddle Hospital, as well as Main Line Health campuses in Broomall, Collegeville, Exton and Newtown Square. Additionally, Main Line Health operates Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital; Mirmont Treatment Center, and the Home Care Network. There are about 10,000 employees and some 2,000 physicians who work for Main Line Health.

University of Pennsylvania Heath implemented a similar policy in 2013.
