Upper Darby Police Department Honors Officers And Citizens

Posted: Updated:

Police officers and citizens in Upper Darby were honored for their bravery.

The ceremony recognized citizens who serve as the eyes and ears of their community to assist police and officers who go above and beyond. A little girl was also honored for her life saving actions.

12-year-old Mikayla Dittbrenner received an award Tuesday night from Upper Darby Police who credit her with saving her mother's life.

"My mom was laying on the floor and there was blood on the floor," said Mikayla as she recalled the day in March of last year. It was during spring break when she walked into a room and found her mom unconscious. She describes in one word what she felt.

"Scared," said Mikayla. She had no idea her mother was suffering from a life threatening illness but says she remembered what she learned in school.

"If something's wrong you call someone in your family and then you call the cops," said Mikayla. She also cared for her younger brother and sister until Upper Darby Police got there.

Her mom Terri was proud to see her little girl alongside her Girl Scout troop from Highland Park Elementary School honored.

"They said that if she had not done what she did and kept it together that I probably would have died," said Terri.

Superintendent Mike Chitwood also recognized officers for going above and beyond their required duties. During the ceremony Officer Michael Taylor was embraced by Debra Whitehead is one of them. Her husband, a local business owner, died of a heart attack last August but not before Officer Taylor revived him with a defibrillator and CPR long enough for his wife to speak to him.

"To use her words, he never woke up but all the nurses and doctors said he could hear me. And because of Officer Taylor's quick response at least I was able to tell Walt how much I loved him. I'm so grateful to Officer Taylor for that," said a law enforcement official reading a letter from Debra.
