FOX 29 Talks To Officer Behind Heartwarming Community Moment

Posted: Updated:

It's not every day we hear about the good things that police officers do in the community. FOX 29 has a conversation with the officer who's inspired so many, by doing something he thought few people would even notice.

The images made us smile! On this day, Erial, New Jersey residents, Richard Williams and Heather Mezick were not only looking out, but taking note of what was happening!

"I was really surprised I even caught this amazing moment," recalled Melzick. "This was a special moment... especially in this neighborhood."

Gloucester Township police officer, Craig Walsh, showed such kindness to the boys who live on this street. So moved by the gesture, Heather took out her phone and started recording.

"i never see an adult or anybody ever interact with these boys or even say hello," she said. "it really struck my heart."

Boyfriend Richard was touched as well.

"to see him, just out there talking and communicating with them and they were just all into it…they all surrounded him and was listening.." said Williams.

The rookie officer didn't know that his time with the kids was being videotaped.

"I got out of my car and just started talking to them about school, sports, grades and stuff like that," said Walsh. "It was like ten kids total. I think...we had planned a real quick game of football, me being the quarterback."

The game lasted all of five minutes before Officer Walsh had to leave to answer a call. However, to the surprise and delight of the kids, he came back a short time after.

"There's always good acts done by officers, every single shift and multiple officers stop and talk to kids... help people shovel now. This happens every single day," said Walsh.

Gloucester Township police captain, Jeff Weiserth, couldn't agree more!

"Getting out there and making contact with our youth and the community, which is what we are all about," said Weiserth.

Officer Walsh will definitely make a lasting impression on everyone, both the young and old.

"It really did open a touching part in our hearts, even if it was short amount of time, but for the boys, it will be a lifetime," said Mezick.
