Key West Puckers Up For Annual Conch Shell Blowing Contest

Posted: Updated:

The 52nd Conch Shell Blowing Contest took place this past weekend in Key West, Florida.

Also known as the "Conch Honk" contest, contestants were excited to take part in the tradition.

Shell blowing has been practiced in the keys for generations.

This winner was Michael Cox, from Pueblo Colorado. He brought his own tradition to the event. He used the same shell his father won with, back in 1986!

"In 1986 my father, James 'Whistle' Cox, who was the Conch Honk Champion, and in 1986 he was about the same age that I am today. So it was on my bucket list to come to Key West, Florida, and do my duty and reclaim the family trophy," explains Cox.

Cox believes his father's shell may have been the lucky ticket.

"This was my father's shell, so I knew this was going to give me a leg up, it's already won one competition, and now I'm so happy, it's won another," continues Cox.

The conch honking contestants are judged on quality, duration, loudness, and novelty.
