Police Search For Man Who Shot Philadelphia Police Officer

OVERBROOK -

Police are searching for an attempted cop killer after an off duty officer was shot just after midnight Sunday.

46-year-old Robert Penn was shot after pulling into his driveway in the Overbrook section of the city.

A family member told Fox 29 the officer was alert and talking. He is now listed in stable condition at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

While he continues his recovery, his fellow officers are looking for the person who did this to him.

Detectives spent the day knocking on doors on the 7300 block Brentwood Road looking for witnesses in the shooting of Officer Penn.

They also employed a K-9 to help them look for evidence.

The rear driveway of these houses is where police say one of their own was ambushed and shot.

"When he got out of his car in the drive way, someone walked up behind him, we believe it was a male and uttered some words, we're not quite sure what they are right now and shot him," Philadelphia Police Department Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross Junior said.

Ross said the 46-year-old was shot once in the shoulder.

He said the bullet went into the right shoulder of the 16th district officer and out his back.

"We're very fortunate he's going to be okay because had it entered on the other side we would be in a lot more trouble," Ross said.

Ross said the 24-year- veteran of the force had just gotten off work and was out of uniform was he was shot.

They're investigating if the suspect knew him.

"We're not clear about the motive at this particular time, we're still trying to glean that information from the investigation," Ross said.

Investigators said the suspect, described as a man around 5 foot 8, ran east away from the alley on Brentwood.

They're hoping tips from the public can help them solve the case.

"A lot of times we like to tell folks irrespective of what little you may think it is, it could be a lot to us, so just give us a call with any information you have," Ross said.

Neighbors described Penn as a nice person who mostly kept to himself.

Police said he has two children with his wife who is a Lieutenant with the Philadelphia Police Department.

Anyone with information can call Southwest Detectives at 215-686-3183.
