Pro-charter school rally during de Blasio Albany visit

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Mayor Bill de Blasio headed to Albany on Tuesday to push for a tax on New York City's rich to pay for universal pre-kindergarten and middle school after-school programs.

Hundreds of parents traveled north to publicly show their support for the mayor's plan.

The city needs $190 million to double the number of schools with after-school programs. The increase would allow public middle school students to have access to those programs which run until 6 p.m.

The state Legislature must approve a tax for New York City residents.

A pro-charter school, anti-de Blasio rally was intentionally planned to coincide with the mayor's Albany lobbying.

More than 100 schools from nine cities were expected at the rally.

The protesters from New York City including students, parents and staff boarded buses in Harlem on Tuesday morning. They want to save three charter schools expected to be closed by De Blasio who is against charter schools on public school property.

Approximately 600 students would be displaced.

The NY Post reported on Tuesday that Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a meeting last month that the state would pay the rent of city charter schools kicked out of their space.
