Apple demonstrates CarPlay

Plenty of automakers are incorporating aspects of the smart phone into their new models. Apple is now taking it a step further. Apple's new CarPlay puts Siri right in the passenger seat with you.

The system -- soon to be available in cars from Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Ferrari -- will display iTunes, maps and other apps, and will even read and send text messages for you without you having to glance at your phone.

While the new technology could keep drivers' eyes off of phones, Robert Sinclair of AAA New York says that doesn't mean they will keep drivers focused on the road, specifically when it comes to listening to and dictating text messages.

"We found drivers were so overwhelmingly distracted they did not see things going on in front of their vehicles," Sinclair says.

Apple is not the first company to turn its sights on the auto industry. Earlier this year google announced plans for an interface on consoles in cars, including Audi.

But Sinclair says whether it's Apple or Android, if you're driving and using one of these smart systems, be extra cautious because they are distracting to your brain.

Apple's CarPlay is expected to expand to other car brands such as Honda and Toyota in the future.

If an iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts is part of your afternoon routine, expect a nudge to buy a cookie or doughnut you didn't plan on. Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said in a phone interview Thursday that the company is pushing to get its cashiers to "upsell" to afternoon customers. It's part of an effort to increase sales after stores have emptied out after the morning rush.
