NJ Residents Sue Leonardo DiCaprio Over Movie He Produced

Posted: Updated:

The film in question, "Out Of The Furnace," didn't receive great reviews, but the real outrage is towards DiCaprio's depiction of the film's mountain-dwelling characters.

The eight plaintiffs from Ramapo Mountains claim that DiCaprio's film, released Dec. 6, 2013, gave them emotional distress. DiCaprio's film is being accused of portraying the mountain townsmen as poorly educated and inbred.

DiCaprio now faces counts of false light, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, according to the official documents.

The documents suggest the claimants are demanding a trial by jury.

Key facts that the plaintiffs claim as defamation, according to the court documents:

  1. "Harlen DeGroat and 'his gang' are easily recognized as residents of the State of New Jersey and are referred to as the Ramapo Mountain People"
  2. "It is common knowledge that people from the Ramapo Mountains live in the Ramapo Mountains in New Jersey."
  3. "The movie shows a police car that has 'Bergen County' on it and a police officer wearing a Bergen County uniform"

Lines from the film that contribute to these claims, also according to the court documents:

  • "Inbred mountain folk from Jersey"
  • "You f*** with these inbreds, you'll be crawling back if you're lucky"
  • "In Ramapo they have fights"
  • "DeGroat is a nasty son of a b****. Money and drugs drove the crazy son of a b****."
