ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Anyone who has been behind the wheel knows that metro roads have been a mess lately, but with temperatures rising, more and more potholes are cropping up too -- and Fox 9 News set out to find them.

The craters that open up at intersections, in the middle of ramps, and sprinkle Minnesota highways are more than just a pain -- they're expensive for the owners of damaged cars and city budgets. Worse still, it seems like they're everywhere this year.

"I think this is going to be one of the worst [years] with all the snow and the cold," Andy Thomas, of St. Paul Public Works, admitted.

In residential neighborhoods, city streets or interstates, drivers are trying to avoid letting a bumpy ride become a big budget dig -- but a winter that has been brutal in so many ways simply won't let spring make a smooth entrance.

"There are some really deep ones," Dusty Washam, a car mechanic by trade, told Fox 9 News. "I mean, those are the ones that get you -- the on-ramps. The big ones can blow out your tires. They are no fun."

The snow that piled up, froze and even fused to the pavement in some area is now beginning to recede as the first week of March brings in warmer temperatures. As it does, the toll winter has taken on the roads is coming to light -- and it's not a pretty sight.

"They are ugly, real ugly," Joanne Litzau said of the roads. "Even the highways are ugly with potholes."

Many public works departments are now transitioning their crews toward full-time pothole patching -- but even Thomas, who has spent 14 years maintaining St. Paul's roads, admits he is stunned by what he is seeing. His pothole team was on its third truckload of by mid-afternoon.

"This is like a temporary patch," Thomas added. "How long it stays depends on the traffic."
