Surveillance Catches Man Trying To Rob A Bank With An Umbrella

Posted: Updated:

Police are crediting a witness with helping them catch an alleged bank robber in Laurel, Md.

They say 42-year-old Robert Williams used an open umbrella to carry more than $20,000 out of the PNC Bank located at 390 Main Street. It happened around 9:30 a.m. on February 19.

He had attempted to stuff the cash into his jacket, but it started falling out as he headed for the door, so he grabbed the umbrella. Simultaneously, various customers and employees called 911.

One man followed the suspect outside and was able to flag down officers who chased him into Howard County before he stopped.

According to investigators, no weapon was displayed, but was implied to tellers.

Williams is charged with the robbery and numerous traffic offenses.

This is the same bank that was targeted by a man dubbed the "Santa Claus Robber" last December. He wore a bearded disguise and fired a shot into the air before making off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police say that case was closed and is not related.
