Mom gives birth while battling breast cancer

Posted: Updated:

Sara Erzen, 35, was pregnant with her third child when she found a lump in her breast.

She says her doctors in Lansing told her not to worry about it because she was young so it was likely nothing serious. But, in her heart, she knew something was wrong.

She went back to the doctor during her 21st week of pregnancy.

"I kind of asked at the last minute, 'I really need this looked at again because it just doesn't seem right.' And we finally got a referral to a breast surgeon," says Sara.

She had a biopsy immediately that day, and found out the next day her cancer was stage-three and had spread to her lymph nodes.

"We offered her the option of having the chemotherapy, delaying the surgery so that she might, at some stage like now, be a candidate for having breast-conserving surgery, meaning we don't have to remove the breast. If we can do that, that's what we would hope for," says Dr. David Nathanson, the Director of Breast Care at Henry Ford Hospital.

Being pregnant saved Sara's life.

Dr. Nathanson says no surgery, chemotherapy or radiation is performed in the first trimester because it's too dangerous. Once it was safe, Sara had four successful rounds of chemo without any trauma to the baby.

Sara's baby girl was scheduled to arrive Thursday afternoon via C-section. Sarah will then undergo intense surgery, more chemo, a bilateral mastectomy and then radiation.

Sara admits she is scared, but has faith. "With the way everything has gone I'm really confident and I'm very faithful, too."

Faith has played a big role in moving her family forward, and it is a name Sara and her husband will give to their daughter.

Sara says she can't wait to hold her daughter and say 'thank you.'

Adeline Faith was born Thursday at 2:21 p.m. weighing 8 pounds and 12 ounces.

Sara says when doctors performed the C-section her cancer did not appear to have spread anywhere else.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
