Victim's Family Donates Dog To Cops

The Miami Dade Police Department has a new officer on their squad and it's thanks to the family of a crash victim.

Bear, a German shepherd, was owned my Maritza and Diego Medina.Maritza was killed in a violent crash caused by a man who had murdered two people in Southwest Miami Dade.

Police responded to the September 2013 shooting and were given information about the suspect's car. When police caught up with the car, the suspect continued to lead police on a chase. Suspect Antonio Feliu's, struck a vehicle at a high rate of speed killing the driver, Maritza.

When police approached Feliu's car he was found dead inside.

As an honor to Maritza, her husband Diego donated the young German shepherd to a law enforcement agency.

"What happen after her death, Bear was trained in personal protection, so Bear kept on searching the house every time someone would come over, the door would open Bear was searching for, and unfortunately Diego couldn't handle the stress," said K-9 unit Lieutenant Jeff Schmidinger.

Schmidinger said, "This is our first dog that we've accepted as a donation in the last eight years as a patrol dog and he's working on very good."

Bear is still in training but will soon hit the streets in April to protect the citizens of Miami-Dade County.
