Trespassing Suspect Sought After Train Hit Items Left On Tracks

PHILADELPHIA -

SEPTA police are looking for a man who they say was spotted on surveillance video after a subway train struck items left on Broad Street Line tracks over the weekend.

On Sunday at 4:25 a.m. the Broad Street Line train struck a metal barrel and several bags of track clips that appeared to have been intentionally placed on the track between the North Philadelphia and Susquehanna/Dauphin stations.

The train was heading to the Walnut-Locust station to begin service for the day and was not carrying passengers. There were no injuries to SEPTA personnel, nor was there any damage to the train or rails.

A review of surveillance video showed a man entering the Susquehanna/Dauphin station's southbound platform from the track area, and he's also seen coming up from the track area at Cecil B. Moore Station and Girard Station during an approximately one-hour period.

SEPTA police described him as a white male or light-complected Hispanic or black male, in his late 20s to early 30s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds. He was wearing a distinctive dark blue and black letterman-style jacket with gray sleeves and an insignia on the chest (possibly the letter "L") and on the back (possibly the letter "A").

"Although the intentions of this individual are unknown, his actions could have placed others in harm's way and, in that the power source for the train – the third rail – was live, due to his risky behavior this individual also placed himself in danger," SEPTA police said in a news release.

Transit police are investigating, and anyone who might have information that could lead to his identification or apprehension should notify police or call 215-580-8111.
