St. Peter mourns loss of mother, daughter in Hwy. 169 crash

ST. PETER, Minn. (KMSP) -

Family and friends are reeling in St. Peter after a mom and her daughter were killed in a gruesome car wreck along Highway 169 on Sunday.

"She was a single mom. She did anything she could for her daughter. Just to please her daughter," cousin Catie Schwarz said.

Family told Fox 9 News that Lindi Paul and 5-year old Emma were inseparable.

Their sudden deaths were much to take for loved ones including Schwarz.

"I'm heartbroken. I'm shocked. I can't believe it. She is so young. Her daughter is so young," she said.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the accident.

Paul was driving a Dodge Caliber between St. Peter and Mankato. Her daughter was buckled in, but she was not. At some point, Paul lost control of the vehicle and flew across the median and struck a Ford F-150 head-on – the driver was killed as well.

Tony Smisek heard the news Sunday afternoon. He spent several years working alongside Paul at the main grocery store in their hometown of St. Peter.

"She was fun to work with. Always smiling. She always came to work even when she was sick. It didn't matter. Always came. Everybody liked her," Smisek.

One person close to Paul wondered aloud if she may have unbuckled her seat belt to help out her daughter only to lose control of the car. The highway was dry yesterday, no ice, good visibility, and there was no hint of alcohol on Paul's breath.

"The only thing I can say is when people drive, they just don't take the time to slow down because we only have the one life to live. We should try to live it the best we can," Smisek said.

This crash didn't just devastate one family. In the other vehicle was a grandma, a grandpa and their two young grandchildren both under 10 years old. They've asked for privacy as they prepare to bury a loved one and the others recover from their injuries.

There's a big misconception about food vendors at the Minnesota State Fair. Many people think you can set up a booth, work 12 days and make a pile of cash. But it's not that easy. Aside from a lot of hard work, it also takes some luck.
