Woman Says She Felt Judged By Gym Staff Members

A woman in Richmond, California says she feels very much judged by a Planet Fitness gym.

Tiffany Austin is recovering after a car accident. Her doctor recently told her to start walking more so she signed up for a membership at a Planet Fitness gym.

On Monday, she hopped on the treadmill and began walking.About 15 minutes later, she said a staff member told her toned body was actually intimidating other people in the gym.

Austin says she was wearing a half-shirt and Capri pants and that was evidently in violation of the gym's code.

"She says excuse me we've had some complaints you're intimidating people with your toned body so can you put on a shirt," said Austin.

She says she was only told not to wear a string tank because of the dress code policy at the gym.

She agreed to wear a shirt, but while the first staff member went to get it she says she was approached by another staff member who also took issue with her body. Austin says at that point she had enough; she asked for a manager - asked for her money back and left.

"It's unfair to show off your body because that's what they don't want," said gym member Geovanna Borges.

"In a lot of ways I think what Planet Fitness is a positive thing they obviously need to iron out some of these issues but sport in the U.S. is by nature is discriminatory to it is selective it is elite," said UC Berkeley Director of Athletic Studies Derek Van Reheenen.

Planet Fitness's mantra is "no judgments" and Austin says she felt very much judged by the whole ordeal. The gym has over 5 million members and a policy that bans what they call "gymtimidation."

Its website says members can get in shape without being, "subjected to the hardcore look-at-me-attitude that exists in too many gyms."

"Really I felt intimidated and harassed by the place that says no intimidation," Austin said.

A spokesperson for the company told KTVU that Planet Fitness "strives to make everyone feel comfortable" and says the dress code is at the discretion of the staff and manager.
