Suspect Arrested In Stabbing Of Off-Duty Officer, Bartender

Posted: Updated:

Philadelphia police say they have arrested a suspect in the stabbing of one of their own and another man outside a local bar.

Investigators said Friday afternoon that they were looking for 39-year-old William Johnson, of the 400 block of Morris Street. Around dinnertime came word that he was in custody.

The 200 block of South Camac Street in Center City was packed with police after one of their own was stabbed multiple times outside of the Venture Inn bar. The violence erupted just after 11 p.m. Thursday.

According to police, the 49-year-old off-duty officer was stabbed four times, suffering injuries to his torso and leg. The officer underwent surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and was later released.

A 40-year-old bartender was also injured in the face and treated nearby. He received eight stitches.

Police say the incident happened after the men refused to give the suspect money, FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce reports.

"We did find several cameras in the immediate area where this stabbing took place," Chief Inspector Scott Small said. "So, hopefully these cameras can help us with our investigation. The scene consists of some blood from our victims. We also found the knife that was discarded down some steps in the area of 200 block of South Camac Street."

The 4-inch long hunting knife was being dusted for fingerprints and checked for DNA.
