Va. store owner sells winning Mega Millions ticket-- to herself

Posted: Updated:
HERNDON, Va. - The owner of a Virginia market is $3 million richer after she bought a winning Mega Millions ticket—from her own store.

A day after the March 14 Mega Millions drawing, Glinda Salgado—who co-owns The Elden Market & Deli in Herndon-- says she was told the winning ticket was sold at her store.  Salgado tells FOX 5 she was thrilled to learn she’d be receiving the $10,000 bonus for selling a winning Mega Millions ticket a her store.

“Oh good, somebody won. Yay!” she recalled thinking when she heard the news.

But a day later when Salgado checked her own ticket—the news got even better. She had the $1 million winner in her hands.  Not only that, but she had used the Megaplier option to triple the prize—so she took home $3 million instead.

“I didn’t think it was me, so I didn’t check my ticket,” she said.

Lottery officials presented Salgado, who is from Chantilly, with the check for her winnings on Monday at the store.  She said she picked four of her numbers based on numbers that are important to her, and two others at random.  If she had matched just one more number, she would have won $353 million instead!

Salgado says she doesn’t have any immediate plans for her winnings.

You might say Salgado’s store is located in an area with some lottery luck.  It’s just a couple of blocks from a Giant food store where a $107 million Mega Millions jackpot was won in 2011.
